The Stirling engine is a very old engine invented by Robert Stirling in 1816. He added to his engine a regenerator to increase the efficiency of the engine.

In theory, the efficiency of the Stirling cycle is identical to that of the Carnot cycle. In practice, this is far from being the case.

There are three types of Stirling engine : α, β, γ.

In order to operate the Stirling engine needs a hot and a cold source.

The formula for the theoretical efficiency of the Stirling cycle is :

Calculation of the efficiency for a cold source between 0 and 30 degrees and a source between 30 and 1000 degrees

Efficiency = 1 - () / ) = 48.85 %

with cold source temperature = 20 ◦C and hot source temperature = 300 ◦C
